Rwanda Abakundakawa; Fair Trade, WP

Abakunda Kawa Rushashi is a coffee cooperative located in the northern region of Rwanda in the district of Gakenke. The members of Abakunda Kawa officially formed the cooperative in 2004, and that year they built their first washing station. The cooperative is situated at an altitude of 1700-1900 meters and encompasses five distinct zones. Abakunda Kawa is composed of 1,956 producers, of which 41percent are women. The Fair Trade price has enabled workers at ABAKUNDAKAWA to establish various social and productive programs Home Improvements. Potable water supply was increased. Transportation Improvements. Abakunda Kawa made much-needed repairs to the roads near the the cooperative's central washing station. Womens Programs. In 2006, a group of 50 women in the cooperative joined together to establish a women’s association to discuss and solve pressing issues. The association Hinga Kawa now has 109 members, of which 35 percent are widows. The goals of the association are to promote the coffee sector, improve the quality and quantity of their coffee, improve their socioeconomic status, establish alternative sources of income, and focus attention on women’s issues.

Cupping Notes: The flavor of this coffee is bursting with ripe red currant fruit, and refreshing hibiscus with a sweet grapefruit acidity.
